Award-winning home theater uses 7 miles of fiber optic cable to create a starry ceiling

These days, it’s nothing new to have a home theater with a 200-inch screen, Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 surround sound, a Kaleidescape 4K movie server, and 14 leather power seats. But add a cool star ceiling, a $100 Roku HD TV box, and a $50 Echo Dot, and things get really cool.
Designed and installed by TYM Smart Homes in Salt Lake City, the Hollywood Cinema won the 2018 CTA TechHome Award for Excellence in Home Theater.
The space is not only distinguished by the vibrant, high-definition images beamed from giant screens and 4K projectors, but also by the ceiling – the “TYM Signature Star Ceiling,” created from seven miles of fiber optic threads depicting 1,200 stars.
These starry sky ceilings have become almost a signature element of TYM. The masters have changed the usual starry sky patterns of the past and created designs with star clusters and a lot of negative space.
In addition to the entertainment part (creating the ceiling design), TYM also had to solve several technical problems in the cinema.
First, the space is large and open, with no back wall to mount speakers on or block the light from the courtyard. To solve this ambient lighting problem, TYM commissioned Draper to build a custom video projection screen and paint the walls a dark matte finish.
Another key challenge for this job is the tight schedule. The home will be featured in the 2017 Salt Lake City Parade of Homes, so the integrator had to complete the work quickly and efficiently. Fortunately, TYM had already completed construction of the state residence and was able to prioritize key areas to best showcase the theater’s design and features.
The Holladay Theatre features high-quality audiovisual equipment, including a Sony 4K projector, Anthem AVR receiver with 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos surround sound system, Paradigm CI Elite speakers and a Kaleidescape Strato 4K/HDR cinema server.
There’s also a powerful, compact $100 Roku HD box that can play all the other types of content that Kaleidescape doesn’t support.
It all works on the Savant home automation system, which includes the Savant Pro remote and mobile app. The $50 Amazon Echo Dot smart speaker can be controlled by voice, making a very complex setup simple and easy to use.
For example, if someone says, “Alexa, play Movie Night,” the projector and system will turn on, and the lights in the bar and theater will gradually dim.
Likewise, if you say, “Alexa, turn on snack mode,” Kaleidescape will pause the movie until the lights are bright enough for you to walk to the kitchen behind the bar.
Homeowners can not only enjoy watching movies and TV shows in the theater, but also view security cameras installed around the home. If a homeowner wants to throw a big party, they can broadcast the movie screen (full screen or as a video collage) to other displays in the home, such as the game room or hot tub area.
